Does the single player campaign in Battlefield 3 set up the plot for the multiplayer?

Like did the nuke go off at the end of the campaign, causing the US to declare war on Russia and that is why the (normal) multiplayer is all about the US vs. Russia?Does the single player campaign in Battlefield 3 set up the plot for the multiplayer?

In the end, the main protagonist stops the antagonist from setting off the bomb in the United States, and thus prevents the starting of the war. But the bomb that DID go off was in Paris, so... I guess that would be enough to get the United States involved. But in the campaign, it doesn't even try to explain the events of the multiplayer like in Bad Company 2.
